Humsafar
Components
Care,
Support and Treatment
The
care and support program was conceived since the center started
referring clients to LTMG Hospital for testing and later to
other peripheral hospitals for HIV screening. If the results
were confirmed sero-positive cases the clients were counseled
and a new case file was opened at the LTMG hospital for follow
up. The clients were referred for a battery of tests to undertake
prior to commencement of any treatment.
In 2001 testing facilities were activated in the HST but it
was not until July 2002 that reports started being given at
the HST clinic. Post test counseling which earlier happened
in LTMG hospital started happening within HST premises and reports
could be collected from HST clinic. The clients who tested positive
would discuss their issues about their status as a positive
person with each other as a small support group. However, it
was noticed that MSM who are positive find it difficult to discuss
their positive status within Humsafar premises and would prefer
a safe space. Thus began the process of setting up Safe Sailors
Club- a support group for HIV positive MSM now being managed
by positive MSM. The outreach workers, counselors and doctors
refer clients to the support group meetings.
The SSC is also regularly discussed at various community mobilization
events within or outside the HST premises and information about
SSC is given. The Safe Sailors Club is a safe space for positive
people, although it was moulded to cater to the needs of MSM,
the club has always kept its door open for positive people irrespective
of sexuality and sexual orientation. Safe sailors club exists
to provide a sense of belonging and togetherness to people living
with HIV in the community. The activities of the club are totally
managed by PLHAs so total confidentiality is ensured.
A multidisciplinary team approach is utilized offering physician,
nursing, care and support, and outreach services. The program
provides:
* Safe space for
positive men to meet and discuss their issues
* Initiate activities
for getting family and community support
* Professional
mental health support
* Initiate training
and employment programs
* Initiating programs
to promote healthy minds and healthy bodies
* Treatment of
Opportunistic Infections (OIs) and enrollment in accessing ART
* Nutrition counseling
and nutritive supplement support
* Provision of
potable water and weighing machine at SSC premises
