Gaurav-Aastha DIC

The HST Gaurav-Aastha drop in center was inaugurated in the month of December 2005, this
DIC (Drop-In-Center) was set up to cater to needs of a safe space, recreational and skills building center for male sex workers in Mumbai district. Nestled among the low rise buildings and cottages in the Juhu Koliwada area of Mumbai it is a stone throw away from the Juhu beach.

The center also houses a clinic and an administrative office for the HST Aastha project, the DIC is functional throughout the week from 12 pm to 8pm expect on Sundays and other public holidays. Communities visiting the drop in center have access to newspapers, health magazines, music system and a television fitted with cable. The center though smalls sees around 10 -15 visitors in a normal week day and on days earmarked for events like Fridays and Wednesday we see 30 - 50 people accessing and participating in the activities. The DIC is managed through a voluntary committee of project staff, peer educators and regular community members who visit the center frequently and self volunteer to take charge of organizing events and management of the center on particular event days. If there is a paucity of space then the team manages the community at the near by Juhu beach by organizing telegames and infotainment activities on the beach, it also make sure that no eve teasing takes place on the beach with the community and a task force committee is in place to manage any untoward incident or crisis management occurring.

The DIC organizes the following activity at regular intervals:
1. Yoga and massage workshops
2. Get together
3. Telegames and infotainment activities
4. Onsite events
5. Legal awareness session
6. Police advocacy session
7. Nutrition sessions
8. Self help group meetings
9. Film shows and street plays

The center also has a fully functional clinic with STI lab facilities offering STI consultation through diagnosis and treatment, general check up facility, sexuality and risk reduction counseling, RPR testing, blood grouping and other basic blood/ urine examination, through three qualified doctors,
1 male nurse, 1 lab technician and 1 community counselor manning the clinical services with support from a drop in center in charge, 7 outreach workers, 1 MIS, 1 Advocacy officer and 1 project supervisor. The center is managed by Shashikant Kakade, project manager and the HST Gaurav Aastha team.
