Training and Capacity Building

The Outreach workers go through an intensive three-day training program twice a year. This program is designed to provide them theoretical and practical inputs that would benefit and supplement their field work.

Some of the topics covered during the training program are as follows:
* Basics of HIV, AIDS and STIs
* Orientation to the various subgroups within the MSM group and sensitization to homosexuality
* HIV and opportunistic infections
* Concept of VCCTC
* ARVs
* Counseling
* Nutrition
* Care and support of HIV positive individuals
* Behavior change communication strategy and implementation
* Legal literacy and police advocacy
* Rapport building with the community
* Dealing with police harassment/hustlers and managing various crisis situation on the sites
* Stigma/Discrimination and Human Rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community
* Team building and community empowerment.

The training module at Humsafar has seen three different phases of evolvement in the last six years:

* First Phase : Resource persons trained ORWs
* Second Phase : ORWs trained ORWs
* Third Phase : ORWs on different projects train each other

The Humsafar Trust has very few professionally trained staff, but it offers training courses to all its office staff and outreach workers. These are reinforced by regular workshops to upgrade staff knowledge and skills, combined with on the- job support and supervision. As a result, Humsafar staff generally feels confident about their own knowledge and skills. The modest financial support provided helps to maintain staff morale and maintain staff continuity and consistency in performance standards. Outreach staff also appreciates the regular visits and 'crisis support' which they receive from their colleagues at the Humsafar office.When skills development programs were initiated for the lower income men it was felt that gay men and other MSM would prefer courses in make up, hair dressing, professional dancing. In a matter of months the image of us took a beating. In the next phase more well defined skills programs were initiated like computer courses, stationary manufacturing courses and professional public speaking programs. These became successful. It was a learning experience that skills building programs should be aimed at providing skills that would lead to better job and income opportunities and not get trapped in the stereotyped images of the society.
